CHAPS

Leather leggings worn over trousers to protect the legs from thorns, brush, and rope burns while riding. Open-backed, buckled at the waist and thigh. The word is inseparable from the landscape that required them — mesquite, chaparral, cactus.
Etymology
Short for chaparreras, from Spanish chaparro (scrub oak, low brush). The protective gear named for the vegetation it defended against.
