ash

ASH
A hardwood tree of the genus Fraxinus — tall, straight-grained, and elastic. Ash bends without breaking, which made it the wood of choice for tool handles, oars, baseball bats, and longbows.
Etymology
Old English æsc, from Proto-Germanic *askaz. The same root gives us the Old Norse askr — the world tree Yggdrasil was an ash.
