brink

BRINK

The edge of a steep place — the last ground before a drop. A riverbank, a cliff edge, the lip of a canyon. The word carries the implication that what lies beyond the brink is a different order of experience entirely.
Etymology
Middle English, from Old Norse brekka (slope, hill) or Middle Low German brink (edge, grassland, hillside). Related to Dutch brink (village green, edge).
