Nicola Six knows she’s going to be murdered and sets about arranging it. She picks two candidates in a west London pub — a small-time con man and darts obsessive named Keith Talent, and a rich, gentle sad sack named Guy Clinch — and plays them both, feeding each what he needs. Narrating is a dying American writer who thinks he’s found a story he can just take dictation on. It’s 1999, the millennium is coming, something is wrong with the weather and the sun, and nobody in the book will discuss it. Amis wrote the sentences to be looked at, and the whole thing is a setup.
