In 1912, a Lutheran pastor in Montana takes the confession of a Blackfeet man named Good Stab, who has been coming to the church weekly and telling a story in pieces. Good Stab is a vampire, made by a white creature he was unlucky enough to encounter, and what he wants is to explain what he did to the men who slaughtered the buffalo. The book is that journal, found a century later by a descendant. Jones is Blackfeet, and he puts the Marias Massacre at the center of it. It’s a horror novel and it uses the form to say something no straight history could.
