Prophet

Read

Sunil Rao can tell whether any statement is true — no explanation, he just knows — and he’s been used for that by intelligence services until they got tired of the drug habit. Adam Rubenstein is the American colonel sent to collect him. They investigate a substance called Prophet that manifests objects out of people’s happiest memories, a diner appearing overnight in an English field, and the objects turn out to be lethal. It’s Macdonald’s first fiction, co-written with Sin Blaché, and it’s a queer spy thriller about nostalgia as a weapon, which is not what anybody expected after H is for Hawk.
