Franny Stone talks her way onto a fishing boat in Greenland by promising the crew that the Arctic terns she has tagged will lead them to the last fish in a mostly emptied ocean. The birds are making what may be the final migration of their species, Greenland to Antarctica, and she means to follow them the whole way. Why she needs to do this, and what she left behind in Ireland and Australia, comes out slowly and is not what you assume. McConaghy writes the sea and the birds beautifully and the book is really about a woman who cannot stop leaving.
