The Urban Sketching Handbook: Understanding Light

Read

Light is what makes a sketch read, and this is the volume about it. Woodward works through value structure first — squinting to reduce a scene to three or four tones — then the direction and quality of light, cast shadows and how to get their angles right, backlight, the reflected light bouncing into a shadow that keeps it from going dead, and how the same street looks at four different hours. Watercolor and mixed media demonstrations, side-by-side comparisons of the same subject lit differently. The most useful volume in the series for anybody whose drawings look flat. (Yes, I have the whole series.)
