Make Nice

On My Shelf, Not Yet Read

Three generations of the Pickford family land on Mackinac Island for one more week together: A snail scientist studying an invasive species, his sister on the way out of a marriage, her teenage daughter, the wayward brother, and the father footing the bill for reasons he isn’t saying. The brother has arrived with five pounds of stolen cocaine and a plan to sell it to some rich guy at the hotel, which does not survive contact with a resort full of people who want golf and fudge. Effgen’s debut, and he writes the island — horses, ferries, waffle cones, no cars — as carefully as he writes the family.
