The distinctive scent released when rain falls on dry earth — an earthy, mineral sweetness produced by oils from plants absorbed into soil and rock, released by the impact of raindrops and mixed with geosmin from soil bacteria.
Etymology
Greek petra (stone) + ichor (the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods). Coined in 1964 by Australian mineralogists Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas. The blood of stone.
