Zach Klein co-founded Vimeo, then in 2010 bought 55 acres of woods in upstate New York with his wife and some friends and started building. They needed ideas, so they made a Tumblr to collect pictures of handmade cabins, and it got away from them — ten million visitors, hundreds of thousands of followers, strangers sending in photos of their own places from all over the world. The book is the good half of that, about 200 cabins, plus how-to on framing and siting and building. What makes it more than a mood board is the reporting: Every cabin comes with the story of who put it up, with what money, and how long it took. Klein’s own place at Beaver Brook had mice, and he got Lyme disease out of it.
