Wynn-Williams was a New Zealand diplomat who talked her way into a job at Facebook in 2011 because she believed the thing could do some good in the world. She stayed seven years running global public policy, in the room for the parts you’ve read about — Myanmar, the 2016 election, Davos, the private jet. Her account is that Zuckerberg pursued a China deal that would have handed the government tools to censor and surveil users, that she spent two years trying to get one person hired to moderate content in Myanmar while the killing ramped up. Meta denies all of it, went to arbitration the day the book came out, and got an order barring her from promoting it or criticizing the company, which is a hell of a way to sell a million copies.
