Felix Scheinberger has drawn more than fifty children’s books, and he wrote this to get people over the fear of the blank page. His whole stance is that a sketchbook belongs to you and nobody else, so there’s no wrong way to fill it and no such thing as ruining one. Mistakes are just what the page looks like. He gives you the practical stuff — what notebook to buy, pens, ink, watercolor, composition, perspective, what to draw when nothing looks worth drawing — but the spine of it is permission. Don’t start on page one. Draw badly on purpose. Draw the thing in front of you instead of a photo of it, because you were standing there and it shows. The book is drawn throughout in his own loose, bright hand, which makes the argument better than the text does.
