Collins was shivering in a cave under Fitz Roy in Patagonia when he got the idea: Go out from home in each of the four directions, climb something new, and fill sketchbooks doing it. He told his friend and mentor Jonny Copp about it on a climb in Colorado, and Copp said when do we start. Then Copp was killed in an avalanche on Mount Edgar in China along with Micah Dash and Wade Johnson. So Collins went anyway, carrying a little bag of Copp’s ashes — Yosemite, the Yukon, a tepui in Venezuela, the Keketuohai Valley in Xinjiang. The pages are pencil, charcoal, watercolor, torn paper, photographs, and his own handwriting, closer to a scrapbook than a book.
