Two days after Christmas 1980, security police at the twin American air bases at Bentwaters and Woodbridge in Suffolk saw lights come down in the pines between them and went out to look. Jim Penniston says he walked up to a craft sitting in the clearing and put his hands on the hull, and that symbols pressed into it later came back to him as pages of binary. Nights later, the deputy base commander went out with a tape recorder running and logged a pulsing red object throwing beams down near the weapons storage area; that tape exists. Nick Pope ran the UFO desk at the British Ministry of Defence and has the receipts — Halt’s memo, radiation readings from the landing site, files pried loose under Freedom of Information. What sold it as Britain’s Roswell is that the witnesses were on duty, armed, and guarding nuclear weapons at the time. What it never quite settles is what they saw, but I guess that’s why it’s “unidentified.”
