Los Angeles, 2031, the first spring after the United States comes apart. Peacekeepers are pulling out, the curfew just lifted, the jacarandas are blooming, and everybody in the city is going to a party. Ari Waker walks across Silver Lake past bomb dogs, Red Cross tents, and shanty towns to get to it. Inside, people are drinking and dancing. Then a man stumbles through the crowd who appears to be somebody’s exact double, walks out into the night, and Kareem, the guy throwing the party, vanishes on the spot. Ari — gunrunner, art collector, working for what’s left of the State — goes looking for an answer, and it takes her from a country at war with itself to a resort on the cliffs of Greece where arms dealers do business.
