A fox teaches himself human by lurking under a window while a mother reads bedtime stories, so the whole thing comes at you in his spelling — Yuman, storys, grate. Then a mall goes up over the woods. The food disappears, the foxes scatter, and Fox 8 and his friend Dill go looking for a way to live. Saunders runs it in about fifty pages with drawings by Chelsea Cardinal, and the phonetic voice does something a straight narrator couldn’t: You’re laughing at the spelling right up until you aren’t. It ends as a letter addressed to us, and Fox 8’s ask is that if we’re going to be the ones with the mall and the bulldozers, we could at least be kinder about it.
