Gabriel Dax writes travel books and doesn’t sleep. A fire took his mother and the family house when he was six, and he’s been dreaming it every night since. In August 1960, he’s in Léopoldville and lands an interview with Patrice Lumumba, the new prime minister, who tells him on tape that certain people want him dead and then names them. Months later Lumumba is dead in front of a firing squad, and Gabriel’s tapes become the most wanted object in two intelligence services. Somebody searches his house. Then Faith Green turns up, MI6, ten years older, entirely in control, and starts sending him on errands he doesn’t understand.
