Beatrice is twenty-nine and works at Twin Bridge, a broke residential treatment center in a dust-blown East Texas town called Askewn, minding a floor of furious teenage girls who are on too many drugs or not enough. It’s the near future, which mostly means hotter. Then a heat wave takes the grid down for good and everybody has to get out — four staff, a van full of girls coming off their medication, cops who’ve stopped pretending, and hundreds of miles of blackout to cross. Beatrice has also been lying about something, and it catches her on the road. Nolan writes it funny, which is the surprise. The apocalypse in here isn’t an event, it’s just Tuesday with the power off.
