Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s side, and the first thing Everett does is give him back his mind. The slave dialect is a performance the enslaved put on for white people and drop the second they’re alone — Jim teaches the children how to do it properly, like a language lesson. On his own he’s literate, has read Voltaire and Locke, and argues with them in his sleep. He runs because he hears he’s to be sold south, meets Huck on the island, and from there the river carries the same story you know with everything reweighted. It won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer, and it earns both.
