Making and Drawing

Read

Cane is a British potter, and her argument is that drawing and making are the same activity at different stages. Drawing isn’t how you plan a pot, it’s how you think about one — the loose sketch that finds the curve, the notation that records a shape you saw in water or a hillside, the marks that become surface decoration. She works through her own process from observation to finished vessel, with a lot of her sketchbook pages reproduced, and brings in other makers doing it differently. Aimed at anybody who works with their hands and has been told drawing is a separate skill they don’t have.
