Move Your DNA

Bowman is a biomechanist, and her argument is that exercise isn’t movement. An hour at the gym followed by nine hours in a chair leaves most of your body loaded exactly the same way all day, and cells respond to mechanical load, so the shape of your life shows up in your tissue. She calls it a nutritional model: You need a varied diet of movement, not a supplement of it. So she wants you walking on uneven ground, hanging from things, squatting to rest, sitting on the floor in different positions, getting your feet out of stiff shoes. There are corrective exercises, but the real prescription is to rearrange the house and the day so movement is unavoidable.
