Snowman is living in a tree, wrapped in a bedsheet, maybe the last human, looked after by a group of gentle green-eyed people who aren’t human at all and think he’s a prophet. He works backward through how this happened: A childhood inside a corporate biotech compound with his brilliant friend Crake, the gated science towns and the ruined cities outside them, the pill that everybody wanted, and the woman they both loved. Atwood built the science out of things already underway when she wrote it, which is why the pigs with human tissue and the chicken that’s only breasts don’t read as invention anymore.
