Kirkpatrick spent twelve days alone on the Reticent Wall on El Capitan, one of the hardest aid routes in the world, hauling everything himself, sleeping in a portaledge, terrified most of the time. The climb runs through the book pitch by pitch, and between the pitches is the rest of his life — a dyslexic kid from Hull who couldn’t read properly, working in a gear shop, a marriage and small children he keeps leaving to go do this. He’s very funny and completely unsparing about what the obsession costs the people at home. It won the Boardman Tasker prize and it’s the honest one in the genre.
