Ranger Confidential

On My Shelf, Not Yet Read

Twelve years as a National Park Service ranger — Yosemite, Zion, Grand Canyon, Denali — and this is the version they don’t print in the brochure. Body recoveries below the rim, drug busts, car wrecks, search and rescue for people who ignored every sign, and the psychological arithmetic of carrying that on a seasonal wage with no housing and no pension. Lankford follows two other women rangers alongside her own story, and the book is as much about what the job does to a marriage as about what happens on the trail. Funny in the way people in that work are funny.
