Mallory Viridian has a problem: People keep getting murdered around her, and she keeps solving it, and after enough bodies nobody wants her near them. So she moves to a sentient space station called Eternity, which is largely populated by aliens and only allows three humans aboard. Then a shuttle full of humans arrives and the bodies start again. It’s a locked-room mystery set on a living station whose species-based rules Lafferty enjoys inventing — a hive that shares a mind, a rock species, symbiotic pairings — and Mallory’s actual condition turns out to have an explanation that ties the whole thing together.
