Summers in Squid Tickle

On My Shelf, Not Yet Read

Finch wrote Cape Cod for forty years, then started spending summers in a Newfoundland outport called Burnside β€” known locally as Squid Tickle β€” population under two hundred, on Bonavista Bay. The book is the accumulation of those seasons: Icebergs, capelin rolling onto the beach, whales in the tickle, root cellars, weather that reorganizes the day, and a community living with the cod moratorium that ended the only industry the place ever had. He’s an outsider and stays one, and the neighbors are drawn as individuals rather than as folk. Quiet, funny, and full of the specific.
