Indoek photographed surfers at home — not in the water, in their houses, vans, trailers, and cabins — and the result is a portrait of a subculture through its interiors. Shapers’ garages, boards stacked in hallways, plants, records, wetsuits drying on a rail, a lot of plywood and secondhand furniture. Each subject gets an interview about how they live and what they’ve made room for. It reads as an argument that the life is the point and the gear is incidental, and it launched the whole shelf of books like it.
