The High Sierra

On My Shelf, Not Yet Read

Robinson has been walking the Sierra Nevada since 1973 and has done something like a hundred trips, and this is everything he knows about it in one enormous, wandering book. Route descriptions and gear lists sit next to the geology of a granite batholith, the history of Norman Clyde and the Sierra Club, John Muir taken seriously and then criticized, the Paiute who used those passes for millennia, and long passages on what he calls psychogeology. He wanders on purpose. Read it as the notebook of a man who found the one place that does it for him and kept going back for fifty years.
