A pilot crashes in the Sahara with eight days of water and a broken engine, and a small boy appears out of nowhere asking him to draw a sheep. The boy is from an asteroid the size of a house, with three volcanoes and one demanding rose, and he has been traveling — meeting a king with no subjects, a drunk, a businessman counting stars he thinks he owns, a lamplighter, and finally a fox who explains what taming is and hands over the line about the essential being invisible to the eye. Saint-Exupéry really did crash in the desert, in 1935, and nearly died there. He drew the pictures himself.
