A Vietnam surgeon with three ex-wives, a Mormon river guide with three current ones, a Bronx kid turned desert fanatic, and a woman from the Bronx who keeps them all pointed. They burn billboards, pour sand in bulldozer crankcases, and pull up survey stakes, working their way toward the one target that matters, Glen Canyon Dam. Abbey wrote it funny and profane and never pretended it was a manual, but Earth First! took it as one anyway, and the phrase monkeywrenching came straight out of these pages.
