A German prison in occupied France. Thirty hostages, three to be shot, lots drawn. Chavel, a wealthy lawyer, draws one of the marked slips and offers everything he owns — house, money, all of it — to any man who will take his place. A young man named Janvier does it, for his mother and sister. Chavel survives the war with nothing, and drifts back to his own house, now theirs, where nobody recognizes him, and takes a job as their handyman. Greene wrote it for MGM in the forties, forgot about it, and it surfaced in a studio vault in 1983.
