It’s a village health care manual, first published in 1970 out of work in the Sierra Madre of Mexico, and still the most widely used health book in the world — translated into a hundred-odd languages and used by health workers everywhere with no clinic in reach. How to examine a patient, recognize the common diseases, deliver a baby, set a bone, dose and store medicines, dig a latrine, and know what you can’t treat. Illustrated so it works past literacy and language. Werner’s stance throughout is that ordinary people can do most of this, and that withholding the knowledge is the actual danger.
