New Haven, 1986. Elise Perez is twenty, mixed race, out of the projects, squatting in the house next door to a Yale senior named Jamey Hyde, who has an heir’s trust fund and a family that will not tolerate her existing. They fall into each other anyway, move to New York, and the whole apparatus of his class begins working to end it. Libaire writes the sex and the eighties city with real heat, and the novel is a Romeo and Juliet where the feud is money. Her prose is the reason to read it — image after image that seems like it shouldn’t work and does.
