Five canyons on Cedar Mesa in southeast Utah — Grand Gulch, Slickhorn, Johns, Fish, and Owl — walked and camped and described by a naturalist who was also a fine draftswoman. Zwinger works the geology and the plants and the seeps, and the Ancestral Puebloan sites she comes on in the alcoves, and does it without the swagger the canyon-country genre often carries. Her drawings are throughout. It came out in 1978, before the crowds, and it reads now as a record of what walking that country was like when you could go a week without seeing anyone.
