aphelion

ah-FEEL-ee-un

The point in a planet's orbit when it is farthest from the sun. Earth reaches aphelion in early July — summer in the Northern Hemisphere, the season of warmth, spent at maximum distance from the heat source. The paradox is a lesson in the difference between proximity and angle.
Etymology
Greek apo- (away from) + hēlios (sun). Away from the sun.
