Snow on the ground. Snow that has arrived and settled — no longer falling, not yet transformed by wind or sun or time.
Etymology
From Proto-Inuit-Yupik *aniɣu, “fallen snow,” reflected in Inuktitut as aniu. The meaning narrowed over time to snow-as-resource — snow gathered for water or shelter.
