ash

ASH

A hardwood tree of the genus Fraxinus — tall, straight-grained, and elastic. Ash bends without breaking, which made it the wood of choice for tool handles, oars, baseball bats, and longbows. The emerald ash borer is killing it across North America. We are watching a species leave the landscape.
Etymology
Old English æsc, from Proto-Germanic *askaz. The same root gives us the Old Norse askr — the world tree Yggdrasil was an ash.
