bramble

Any thorny shrub of the genus Rubus — blackberry, dewberry, their tangled kin. A bramble patch is impenetrable by design: Arching canes root where they touch the ground, weaving a living barbed-wire fence that shelters nesting birds and small mammals in its interior.
