bramble

BRAM-bul

Any thorny shrub of the genus Rubus — blackberry, dewberry, their tangled kin. A bramble patch is impenetrable by design: arching canes root where they touch the ground, weaving a living barbed-wire fence that shelters nesting birds and small mammals in its interior.
Etymology
Old English bræmbel, brēmel, related to broom. From Proto-Germanic *brēmaz (thorny bush).
