Parallel rows of cumulus clouds aligned with the wind, marking alternating bands of rising warm air and sinking cool air. The spacing between streets is usually two to three times the cloud height.
Etymology
Descriptive English. The clouds line up in long parallel rows like streets — cloud (Old English clūd, originally “rock, hill,” later “cloud” from the resemblance of cumulus masses to hills) + street (Old English strǣt, from Latin via strata, “paved way”). Also called cloud rows or horizontal convective rolls.
