curlew

KUR-loo

A large shorebird with a long, downward-curving bill — a bird of estuaries, mudflats, and open moorland. The curlew's call is one of the most evocative sounds in the landscape: a rising, liquid whistle that carries across miles of empty ground.
Etymology
Old French corlieu, probably imitative of the bird's call. The cur-lee, cur-lee carries in the name itself.
