The point on the earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake — not where the rupture begins, but its surface projection, the spot on the map where the shaking is typically most intense. The word has escaped geology entirely: in common use, any center of crisis, attention, or activity is called an epicenter. The geological meaning is more precise and more humbling — it is the place on the ground where the energy arrives.
