feldspar

FELD-spar

A mineral component of granite — the most abundant mineral group in the earth's crust. The pink variety gives Cairngorm rock its warm glow; the white variety weathers into clay. Every granite landscape is a feldspar landscape.
Etymology
German: Feldspat, from Feld (field) + spat (spar, a crystalline mineral). Named by miners because it was found in fieldstone but contained no ore.
