hornblende
HORN-blend
A dark mineral found in igneous and metamorphic rocks — one of the amphibole group, contributing the black and dark green to the speckle of granite. The mineral that gives mountain rock its weight and shadow.
Etymology
German: Horn (horn) + blenden (to deceive). Named by miners because it resembled valuable ore but contained no metal — it was the mountain's trick.
