kestrel

KESS-trul

A small falcon that hunts by hovering — hanging motionless in the wind over a field, scanning for voles and insects, then dropping. The kestrel's hover is one of the most recognizable silhouettes in open country. In Britain it was once the commonest raptor. It is declining.
Etymology
Old French cresserelle, possibly from crecelle (rattle), referring to the bird's call. Or from Latin crepitare (to crackle, rattle). The etymology is debated.
