A small, plump shorebird of the genus Calidris — a long-distance migrant that breeds in the Arctic tundra and winters as far south as Tierra del Fuego. The red knot's annual migration is one of the longest in the bird world, roughly 9,000 miles each way. The species depends on horseshoe crab eggs at Delaware Bay to refuel mid-journey.
