marsh

MARSH

A wetland dominated by grasses and reeds rather than trees — waterlogged ground, saturated year-round or seasonally, neither fully land nor fully water. A marsh is among the most productive ecosystems on earth, generating more biomass per acre than most forests.
Etymology
Old English mersc, merisc, from Proto-Germanic *mariskaz (marsh, pool). Related to mere (lake, pond) and ultimately to Latin mare (sea).
