midge

MIJ

A tiny fly of the families Chironomidae or Ceratopogonidae — the biting kind and the non-biting kind, though in practice you mostly encounter the former. In the Scottish Highlands, midges are a force of nature that has shaped human settlement patterns for centuries.
Etymology
Old English mygg, mycg, from Proto-Germanic *mugjō (gnat, midge). Related to Latin musca (fly) and Greek myia.
