mulberry

MUL-bear-ee

A deciduous tree of the genus Morus, bearing dark, compound fruit that stains everything it touches. Mulberry trees were planted across the colonial world to feed silkworms. The trees outlasted the industry. The fruit is too fragile to ship, which means you either eat it from the tree or not at all.
Etymology
Middle English morberie, from Old English mōrberie, a compound of mōr (from Latin morum, mulberry) + berie (berry). The m- to mul- shift may have been influenced by Latin mūlus (mule) or simply by folk etymology.
