An arc of light passing through the sun, parallel to the horizon — caused by sunlight refracting through hexagonal ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. One of the rarer atmospheric optical phenomena.
Etymology
Greek: para (beside) + hēlios (sun). An arc alongside the sun.
